Alt text writer

Upload a screenshot, a product photo or an illustration and get alt text a screen reader user would thank you for — short, specific, no "image of" — plus a longer description, a caption and an SEO-friendly filename.

This tool runs on the AI model, so it needs a free account — sign in or create one (3 runs a day free, 15 on a plan).

Unlimited runs on your plan.

How it works

  1. Choose an image (JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF up to 4 MB). It is downsized to 1024 px on the server before it goes to the model, and it is not kept.
  2. The model writes: alt text under 125 characters that says what matters in context; a longer description for complex images (charts, screenshots); a caption for the page; and a filename with the keywords in it.
  3. If the image is decorative — a divider, a background — the tool says so and recommends alt="".
  4. Paste the alt text into the image tag. Runs on the site's model key, so it needs a free account: 3 runs a day free, 15 on a plan.

Questions people ask

What is good alt text?

It conveys the same information the image gives a sighted reader, in the context of the page — not a list of everything in the picture. "Dashboard showing three competitor prices, one marked as dropped 20 %" beats "screenshot of a dashboard".

How long should it be?

Under 125 characters for the alt attribute; screen readers may cut longer ones. Put the rest in a caption or the surrounding text.

Does alt text help SEO?

A little — it is one of the few signals image search has. The bigger win is accessibility: an EU site is expected to be accessible under the European Accessibility Act since June 2025.

Is my image kept?

No. It is resized in memory, sent to the model and discarded. Only the text result is saved (for your recent runs), for 90 days.
